He ordered the gates thrown open and ordered all the women and children to hide. When the enemy troops arrived, they found the gates wide open. Only one old man was visible. He swept the street inside, paying no attention to the raiders –who were just the other side of the gate. The opposing general, expecting resistance, was certain it was some kind of trap, the enemy troops left without ever going inside.

Both of these examples rely on deception. Julius travelled at night. He left most of his defensive force behind. It could have gone bad for him but it did not. He appeared as if by magic to win the day. The Chinese general made the city look secure, even though it was defenseless. He won by concealing the city’s vulnerability.
